The Legend of Favre

You must be living under a rock if you don't understand that Brett Favre is going to the Hall of Fame as soon as he is on the ballot. The man holds the career records for wins by a QB, TDs by a QB, and owns a Super Bowl ring (against the Patriots of all people.. damn it Bledsoe!). Not to mention he is loved by the media for his style of play, as well as his candor when speaking about anything from football to his life. I get it. What I don't get is how people out there still see him as god's gift to the Quarterback position?? This gunslinger has been shooting blanks for years. Plaxico Burress has hit more targets with his gun than Favre recently!! His best days were in the 90s folks! Aside from the 2007 season where he put up good stats (still threw the game losing INT in the playoffs as expected though) what big games has he won in this decade? I mean, I'm sure its hard to judge his play without bias... especially with him showing off in recent Wrangler ads!! I like to think that Favre's most notable moment wasn't his Super Bowl win or his addiction to pain killers or even his bi-polar attitude towards retiring from football... no, I think its his cameo in "Something About Mary" when Ben Stiller has trouble pronouncing his name. Has anyone seen my weiner?? LOL Seriously though, take what Favre has done and apply it to other facets of life. Imagine if you were a pimp and one of your "girls" used to be a top earner, but in recent years she barely brings in any money... in fact she usually costs you money. Add to that the fact that every year she contemplates getting out of the business... how long would it take you to kick her to the curb? If her name was Favre you would apparently beg her to keep going and you might even give her a nice fat bonus for being a complete drain on your "establishment". Ok, I'm sure that lost a lot of the women reading this. In the event that I am correct, replace pimp with yourself and the hooker with your boyfriend. You had a good few years together, maybe even the best you can remember. However the past year or two he hasn't done anything nice for you, he doesn't compliment you, he cheats on you, etc... do you think you'd be inclined to give him praise, beg him to stay around because there were some amazing times a few years ago, and maybe buy him a nice new car while you are at it?? Yeah, I'm not an expert on women but even I know the answer to this one! So, please tell me why people have trouble letting go?? Few things last forever and thats ok... whats not ok is when you hold onto ideas or beliefs that deep down you know are no longer true because you are too stubborn or too afraid that acknowledging things are different now somehow discredits the memories of what used to be. I say that being honest with reality only enhances the good that used to be and no longer is... I just feel fortunate that I'm a Patriot fan and dont have to worry about that since Tom Brady will always be the greatest to ever put on a helmet and get under center!! : )

The MAGIC of New Years?

Once again we are closing out another year. The countdown to 2009 has begun. New Years Eve is tomorrow and surely there are plenty of events around the city for any and every kind of celebration you might be searching for. Not only is New Years a good reason to get together with friends/family to party and cut loose, but to many people it means much more. Whether 2008 has been good to you or not, it seems that the coming of a new year almost always signifies "a fresh start" in one way or another. Again, people look to the turning of a new calendar to make changes in their life... usually in the form of New Years Resolutions. Anything from dieting to quiting smoking, to a new outlook on their career or even relationships. The idea that turning the page on the calendar makes change any easier than any other day of the year has always been quite interesting to me... almost laughable. That makes as much sense as picking a day in the Fall to have children dress up in costumes in hopes of acquiring massive quantities of candy on a day that originated as a festival that the boundary between the living and the deceased dissolved and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops... oh wait?!? LOL. I'm just kidding, I love Halloween. Heck, I still dress up. In fact its generally one of my more "successful" nights out of the year! Ok, I've drifted off the topic. Even though I don't buy into the "fresh start" myself, I can see the positive energy that idea represents and sometimes even results in actual postive changes to ones life. One might say its like magic potion that allows you to erase or correct your shortcomings and failures of the past year. The point is no matter how you celebreate New Years (I will celebrate with the Captain and maybe my buddy Jager), the idea of change it represents for a large number of people is a very good thing. Life is challenging and if New Years serves as motivation to keep pushing forward and improve your outlook on life... thats ok by me!!! I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Years Eve celebration and I'll be pulling for you to stick your resoulutions this year... even if you have yet to do so in the past decade : )
